Opposition Parties Vote to Keep Long-Gun Registry
September 23, 2010

Regina, SK – On September 22nd, Tom Lukiwski, Member of Parliament for Regina – Lumsden – Lake Centre, and the Conservative Party voted to dismantle the Liberal long-gun registry.  It proved not to be enough as the three opposition parties teamed up to defeat Bill C-391, which would have abolished the registry.

Twenty Liberal and NDP MP’s had originally voted with the Conservative Government to put an end to the wasteful and ineffective registry.  However, under pressure from Jack Layton and Michael Ignatieff, all but six ignored the wishes of their constituents and voted to keep the registry.

“Members of Parliament are voted into office in order to communicate the wishes of their constituents,” said Lukiwski.  “I am obviously disappointed that these members decided to bow to the wishes of their Ottawa bosses, instead of listening to the people that they represent in Parliament.”

The Conservative Government remains committed to repealing the Liberal long-gun registry.  It has been a tremendous waste of money, and has done nothing to prevent gun crime.  It is clear to everyone that criminals do not register their long guns.

“This is the closest we have ever come to dismantling this waste of money,” stated Lukiwski.  “I guarantee that we will continue to work to scrap it.”
